Agentic AI Payments

The future of ecommerce isn’t consumers clicking “Buy Now”—it’s AI agents clicking it for them.

If 2024 was the year of AI chatbots, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of Agentic AI Payments. Two major announcements this month—from Visa and UnionPay—confirm this isn’t sci-fi; it’s the roadmap for the next three to five years.

Visa’s Global Snapshot

Visa’s latest Global Ecommerce Report reveals that only 19% of merchants currently have solutions in place to accept agentic AI payments—roughly on par with crypto acceptance (17%). But the momentum is clear: 63% are actively exploring or implementing solutions, with half already in active deployment. Enterprise merchants lead at 28%, while only 12% of SMBs are ready. For smaller players, the gap is a wake-up call.

UnionPay’s Infrastructure Play

Enter the Agentic Payment Open Protocol (APOP) from UnionPay—a framework designed to solve the biggest barrier: trust. How does a merchant know an AI agent is actually authorized to spend a user’s money?

APOP delivers:

  • Plug-and-play integration for merchants, banks, and tech platforms

  • End-to-end intent management from booking to settlement

  • Streamlined identity via SSO for secure, traceable consent

The result? Lower risk, regulatory compliance, and dramatically simplified technical lift for merchants.

It’s Already Happening

On April 2nd in Hong Kong, a tester used an AI assistant (by Evonet) to book a taxi via Hoppa. The system returned available options, prices, and a recommendation—and the AI handled the booking and intent end-to-end. This isn’t just ordering groceries; it’s complex service integration. Imagine an AI travel agent booking flights, cars, hotels, and restaurants in one go, with a single authentication.

What This Means for You

  1. Your customer is evolving—it may now be a digital assistant comparing options on their behalf.

  2. Trust and authorization become your top priority.

  3. Compatibility matters—with open protocols emerging, don’t be the merchant left out of the plug-and-play ecosystem.

Start Now

You don’t need to overhaul your entire stack today, but start asking:

  • Is my checkout API-ready for AI agents?

  • How should my fraud rules adapt when the “user” is an authorized AI?

  • Am I tracking APOP and similar standards?

The next 12–24 months will separate the leaders from the laggards. Don’t let your store be the one that can’t accept the bot’s credit card.
